ABOUT JESSICA FIKE
I’ve always had an itch to be creative. I took drawing lessons when I was little, took art classes when I was in school, LOVED taking pictures of my friends and family, and even considered going to art school. But it wasn’t until my mom let me assist shooting one of her weddings (she’s also a wedding photographer!) did I realize how much I could enjoy wedding photography.
I was a second shooter for various photographers for two years before starting my business in 2009. Since then, I’ve mostly worked in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia, but have also traveled to Maine, the Outer Banks, and the Bahamas for weddings. I love weddings, I love working with people, and I love creating beautiful, natural images for couples on one of the most important days of their lives!
I currently live just five minutes from Deep Creek Lake with my hubster Brian and our three kids – Ally, Jack and Natalie. I also very much enjoy candy and a good cup of coffee.
Q+A WITH JESSICA FIKE
WHAT IS A JESSICA FIKE WEDDING?
It’s a wedding full of personality and uniqueness. A wedding that was carefully planned to reflect the couple and who they are together. A wedding that has beautiful details, but a couple that doesn’t stress if something goes wrong. It’s a wedding full of life and color and friendly faces… and it takes place with beautiful pictures, inspiring backdrops and good lighting in mind. Maybe in the middle of nowhere in a forest? Maybe on top of a mountain? Maybe there’s no wedding party and maybe there’s 300 people in attendance? There may be hints of tradition with a Pittsburgh cookie table and a ceremony in a childhood chapel, but there’s adventure and uniqueness someway, somehow!
WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN COMMON WITH YOUR CLIENTS?
We’re fun, outgoing, friendly, and don’t mind being a little different.
WHAT MADE ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE EVENTS SO SPECIAL?
There’s actually two events! Both were completely unique and personal. The first was in the middle-of-nowhere West Virginia, tucked in the forest under a blanket of trees. Guests in rain boots and umbrellas, the bride in a blue dress and Lord of the Rings-inspired accessories. A handmade sink with running water, “Johnny Houses”, camping space for guests, and romantic portraits along the river. The second was at Dolly Sods, West Virginia at the couple’s favorite hiking spot. Under 20 guests and a breathtaking view. Hiking shoes, handmade bouquets by the bride, a furry friend, and an intimate dinner at cabin in the mountains. Two wedding adventures that I’ll never forget!
WHAT IS THE HIGHEST COMPLIMENT A COUPLE CAN GIVE YOU?
That they cried when they viewed their wedding pictures for the first time.
WHAT TOOL CAN YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT?
I don’t want to say it, but it’s my phone! I am a people person and it’s one of the biggest ways I stay connected with people. Text messages, phone calls, Facebook and Instagram – it’s how I keep up with and share life and business. I’m able to take pictures with it, too! So if I couldn’t have my camera, I’d at least have my phone for taking pictures.
WHY SHOULD A COUPLE MARRY IN THE DEEP CREEK AREA?
It’s such a cool place. Mountains, lake, woodlands… so much natural beauty. Pretty in the summer, beautiful in the fall and it looks good covered in snow! It’s a destination without being the typical destination for weddings. It’s not the beach, it’s not Vegas… it’s more personal and comfortable and unique. And the people here are pretty nice.
HOW HAVE YOU SEEN THE LOCAL INDUSTRY CHANGE?
I’ve seen new venues pop up…in particular, unique venues. Blue Moon Rising offers woodland weddings in their tiny house village with a giant teepee-like structure. Savage River Lodge hosts intimate elopements and small ceremonies in the forest on the regular. And there’s a new event dock for wedding ceremonies on the lake. I think it’s safe to say there are some people “pushing the envelope” when it comes to weddings at Deep Creek, and it’s exciting to see!
WHAT TRENDS DO YOU WISH WE HAD MORE OF LOCALLY?
More backyard, at-the-family-farm, personal weddings.
IF YOUR BUSINESS WAS A BEVERAGE, WHICH ONE WOULD IT BE?
A LaCroix sparking water! It’s something different, it’s got some spunk to it, and it’s refreshing. It isn’t for everyone though, and that’s okay.
